What is the role of culture in schools? Consider what culture means in your home and community. Consider how you and your community influence the environment. As a teacher who has been teaching for more than five years, I can assure you that cultural issues are important in education today.
Consider all learning styles, contexts, experiences, and ways of learning of people from different cultures. As a teacher of students with special needs, it is easy to see the differences between teachers and students. Aside from diversity, equality is also important. However, many people do not know that teaching cultural equality and diversity in children’s education is important.
Why We Should Be Aware of Cultural Diversity
Students have difficulty accepting that there can be many right ways to do things. Back then, one of my students liked to be the center of attention and talk a lot. A student with a different background was quieter and rarely spoke. The student was seen as different and as an outsider from the rest of the class.
It was clear that the student culture demanded that women be seen and not just heard. The student eventually came out of her shell and began to be more open. It is said that students and people pick on others who are different. She was able to come out of her shell and make friends with her peers. The problem was not her, but the fact that the rules were based on many collaborative conversations. The classroom rules were a reflection of the participants.
Why We Should Encourage Others
Everyone has different values, personalities, and cultures. All students should feel safe and respected in the school and in their environment. We begin each year by introducing ourselves to new sixth-grade students. Students enjoy sharing their cultures, stories, and interests. In this way, my classes recognize that each student has their own traditions, history, abilities, and uniqueness. Each person is unique.
I encourage my students to support others in their endeavors and treat them as they would like to be treated. This fosters an exchange of culture, education, and learning. Showing kindness and respect to those around you should be encouraged when you treat yourself well. Now let’s look at how to promote culture and diversity awareness. There are many ways to promote diversity awareness in your home/school.
Ways to Promote Diversity Awareness in Education
Encourage creative expression. Encourage students’ creativity to express themselves through words, art, painting, writing, or other media. Invite and ask students to share. No matter what type of story, art, or assignment it is, students should be proud of their accomplishments. Sharing can help students learn that people have different perspectives on the world. Discuss the presentation with your viewers,listeners,etc.
Share positive comments with viewers/audience/etc. and comment on what they like and dislike about your presentation/shared article. Multicultural representation is important in the learning environment. To increase cultural awareness, make sure posters and artwork from different cultures are displayed in the learning environment. This helps children see that there is not just one way to draw a pony.
